Visitor Visa

Visitor Visa

Canada welcomes millions of temporary residents (non-immigrants) each year. With the exception of citizens from a visa-exempt country, individuals who wish to come to Canada for a temporary purpose, such as tourists, temporary foreign workers and international students must apply for and be granted a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

TRVs may be for single entry or multiple entry. Most visitors to Canada may visit for up to 6 months on each entry. Visitors wishing to stay longer must apply for and be granted an extension. However, temporary foreign workers and international students are admitted for varying periods of time, depending on their individual case.

The possession of a valid Temporary Resident Visa does not guarantee the entry of the visitor to Canada. All visitors must satisfy the Citizenship and Immigration Canada Officer at the Port of Entry that the purpose of their visit to Canada is of a temporary nature. Besides, criminality and medical issues may prevent a visitor from entering Canada. Visitors must also be able to show that they can support themselves during their intended period of stay in Canada. In order to be eligible for a visitor visa, you must:

    • Have a valid travel document (eg. passport)
    • Be in good health
    • Have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
    • Convince a visa officer that you have family and financial ties in your home country
    • Convince a visa officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay in Canada
    • Have enough money to support you during your stay in Canada
